Description
Salem, Massachusetts, 1692. The court accepted spectral evidence — testimony that the accused had appeared to the witness in a dream or vision — as sufficient grounds for conviction. The accused were unable to disprove this. The Salem Institute Society notes that disproving a dream is, in fact, quite difficult.
The legal community has since revisited this standard. Largely.
